Taking kids ice skating for the first time
Tips for choosing a good session, fitting skates, and helping children enjoy the experience.

Choose a quieter session
An earlier session on a non-holiday weekday can give new skaters more room to practice. Check whether a rink offers lessons or a beginner area.
Fit the skates carefully
Rental boots should feel secure around the ankle and heel without painful pinching. Ask staff for help rather than assuming the street-shoe size is correct.
Prioritize safety
Consider a properly fitted helmet and always follow the rink’s rules. Adults should supervise children on the ice and be ready to pause if a child gets tired or frustrated.
Plan for breaks
Build extra time into your outing for parking, check-in, putting on skates, bathroom stops, and warm-up breaks. Know how long the skating session lasts.
Keep expectations simple
For a first outing, learning to stand and glide a few feet can be plenty. A short, positive experience often matters more than staying on the ice for the full session.
